Already an Update

Posted on 2007.08.21 at 17:15

The insurance guy called.  He made an appointment to come look at the house on the 31st (not 24 hours like he originally said).  He said that they won't cover removing mold unless we had a flood or something since we moved in.  We haven't.

We are going to have to come up with a plan B.  Our across the street neighbor is a really nice guy and has friends that do damage and disaster clean up.  I'm wondering if he could make a deal with us if there is a problem.  We'll have to see.

Anyone out there had dealings with mold?  What did you do?  How did you know you had it and how did you get rid of it?

We have a little room we call the dungeon.  It is just a concrete celler off Simon's bedroom.  Tyler said he went in there today and it smelled really funky and musty.  I had some clean fabric on the ground ready to cut in my craft room (on the other side of the wall from the dungeon) and I picked up the fabric today and it was all moldy smelling and I had to clean it again.  I'm wondering if we have some kind of very slow pipe leak in the foundation.  Sigh.  That doesn't sound good.  We've only had a very few inches of rain this year so it would have to be a pipe leak and not a rain leak.

One more question, does anyone have a money magic wand so we can afford to fix whatever is wrong and get healthy again?  If so, can we borrow it for a few weeks?

oh, man, I am so sorry!
Yes, have had dealings with mold. We moved.
Mold is very dangerous, and that is probably exactly what is making you sick. And the sad thing is, there isn't much that can be done for it apart from tearing out all your inner walls, possibly the timbers and floor/roof and redoing it all. Basically a total rebuild. :( The trouble is, it doesn't take very much humidity to set it growing again, so if the spores are still in the building anywhere, they can flare.
Temporary fixes would be to spray your walls with a bleach solution, get that leak fixed, replace just the lower portions of wall and any affected (damp, discolored) insulation, and repaint *all* the walls and ceilings(even in seemingly unaffected rooms) with several heavy coats of Kilz. Have attic vents installed.
Also, see about getting an air filter- get a good one guaranteed to filter mold spores- one for each sleeping room if you can.
Maybe for a permanent fix you could apply to ABC for their Home Makeover show- I know, one in a million shot, but it's a shot! Especially since it's been making you sick.
Or... you could move. Probably should move. Mold can be deadly.
I wish I had that magic money wand to give you, because dealing with mold is NOT cheap or fun.
Hugs! And more hugs. This really stinks for you. :(

That sounds awful and not worth the work! Tyler and the kids are out right now getting a nice air filter and replacing the filter in a smaller one we have. He is also getting heavy duty carpet cleaner. We'll see if it helps.

We have let our cat become an outdoor cat this week. I am wondering if some of our sickness came from being alergic to her. We are purging our house of dust and cleaning everything and we'll see what happens. I sure hope it isn't mold!

One thing you might want to think about, Sarah, is that if you're at all considering moving, you should not get the mold test done. Hold off until you're absolutely sure you're not selling.

Because once you know the mold is there I'm pretty positive you will have to disclose it to any buyers, and the house will be really hard to sell.

Just a thought. Maybe it's good that the guy can't come back until the 31st. Think about it.

Wow! You're right. I'll have to think about this some more.

Walkwrite gives good advice. Disclosure is an issue. Do you plan on moving at some point? A pipe leak in the foundation could be a pain, but less painful than mold.

My prayers are with you.
